The Department's mission is to provide outstanding care to the children of Iowa and beyond by being a leader in state-of-the-art clinical care to children, performing cutting-edge research to find new treatments and cures for childhood illnesses, and educating the next generation of pediatric health care providers. The Department comprises the medical and research staff of UI Stead Family Children's Hospital. UI Stead Family Children's Hospital is one of the nation's top-ranked pediatric care and research institutions, and Iowa's only comprehensive children's hospital. Division Summary: The Division of Pediatric Hematology/Oncology at University of Iowa Stead Family Department of Pediatrics is a pioneer in the care and treatment of childhood cancers and blood disorders. The division has a long history of success in bringing hope to patients with programs such as our blood and bone marrow transplant, comprehensive sickle cell program, and comprehensive hemophilia center. The mission of the division is to treat and cure children and adolescents with cancer and blood diseases who live in Iowa by delivering personalized multidisciplinary, state-of-the-art care, through participation both in nationally and locally designed protocols. The division features the only program in the state of Iowa that performs pediatric hematopoietic stem cell transplant, and we are the Iowa Comprehensive Hemophilia Center. Position Summary: Within the Stead Family Department of Pediatrics, Division of Hematology/Oncology maintain, update, and ensure the quality of the Iowa Hemophilia & Thrombosis Center and the Iowa Comprehensive Sickle Cell Disease Program databases. Assist in coordination of the Annual Hemophilia Camp, Amish Outreach Clinic, and Sickle Cell Symposium. Position Responsibilities: Reviews, analyzes, and extracts patient medical records information for data collection. Maintains Hemophilia and Sickle Cell databases by entering and updating data, and performing monthly audits to ensure quality data collection. Designs queries and reports through electronic medical record and databases in support of research, patient care, and other projects. Manages the coordination of ATHN research studies through email communication, IRB submissions and modifications, enrollment into studies, and collection and processing of data. Creates and maintains spreadsheets as needed. Uses spreadsheets to assist in visualization, and analysis of research and quality improvement data. Writes simple VBA scripts to automate repetitive tasks. Submits grant applications and performs data quality submissions to specified personnel. Manage and organize regulatory documentation from sites and authorities and prepare regulatory submissions. Validate submitted data, query resolution on complex data problems and make recommendations for resolution. Maintains relationships with the Great Plains Hemophilia Region and the American Thrombosis & Hemostasis Network (ATHN) and prepares federally required reports to these organizations as needed. Attends regional meetings and events, as well as monthly webinars and conference calls with the Great Plains Hemophilia Region, ATHN, and Heartland Sickle Cell Disease Network. Monitors patients' recurring clinic appointments, assists in planning of comprehensive clinic, and attends clinic to gather consents for hemophilia and sickle cell databases as well as various ongoing research studies. Composes communication to patients and providers as needed. Designs and develops surveys for the Hemophilia and Sickle Cell Program, and compiles results. Assists in the planning and execution of annual Amish Outreach Clinic and Sickle Cell Symposium Prepares and presents presentations for data submissions, research study opportunities, and necessary surveys/questionnaire results. Orders supplies, pamphlets and brochures needed by team members for clinic. Orders medical supplies for patient care and research. Assists and guides other team members by updating patient clinic lists and pulling comprehensive data they need. Position Qualifications: Education Required Bachelor's degree in a related field; or an equivalent combination of education and experience Experience Requirements 6 months -1 year of data abstracting and analysis experience Excellent verbal, written and interpersonal communication skills. Demonstrated experience and proficiency in Microsoft Office and databases Demonstrated ability to function independently, needing minimal guidance Desirable Qualifications Knowledge of University policies, procedures and regulations Demonstrated experience working with pediatric patients and their families Highly Desired Qualifications 1-3 years of data abstracting experience within healthcare research Demonstrated high attention to detail.
