Job Description:

Distance and Online Education is seeking a full time (100%), Lead Instructional Designer.



The role of Lead Instructional Designer is to assist faculty and course instructors in the design and development of online/distance education courses. The Lead Instructional Designer will apply instructional design principles to: (1) lead faculty in the process of creating new and transitioning on-campus courses to instructionally sound, engaging online offerings; (2) guide faculty in the process of organizing and/or chunking course content for online delivery, (3) recommend instructional strategies and media to support course goals and objectives; (4) design and develop instructional materials, and (5) setup and/or restructure course content and/or assessments on learning management systems.



Duties include:


Coordinate instructional design projects from start to completion.
Design, write, select, and adapt materials based on instructional objectives.
Consult and collaborate with faculty, course designers, and/or teaching assistants regarding instructional needs, instructional objectives, curricular issues, and the application of instructional design and adult learning principles to the design and delivery of online instruction.
Support the application of technology within the Division of Continuing Education and the University of Iowa





Distance and Online Education (DOE), a department within University College, strives to increase access to the University of Iowa beyond the physical borders of campus. In partnership with university colleges and departments, we provide high-quality academic courses to both traditional and nontraditional students using a variety of locations, schedules, and technologies.



Distance and Online Education allows faculty to work directly with instructional designers, a media team, course coordinators who help support faculty after course has been designed, and an exam service team bringing a cohesive course design for successful implementation


POSITION QUALIFICATIONS:

Education and Experience Required


A Bachelor's Degree in Educational Media, Instructional Development or Design, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Experience (typically 3-5 years) in course design and development, as well as creating instructional and training materials for online delivery. Experience working with online instructional technologies.




Required Qualifications:

Demonstrates a Working proficiency level in the ability to:


Evaluate academic assessment methods and activities, assess research and instructional programs, and review students' learning outcomes to ensure achievement of academic objectives and strategies.
Apply concepts and practices of adult learning and design in the development of distance learning courses.
Utilize distance learning tools and techniques for development and delivery of distance learning courses.
Determine and execute relevant instructional design concepts and processes; ability to design instructional content to meet the learning needs of a target population.
Work with a variety of individuals and groups in a constructive and collaborative manner and effectively communicate using strong written and verbal English grammar, spelling, punctuation, usage, and pronunciation.
Manage multiple concurrent projects or activities and effectively prioritize and allocate time and resources.
Proficiently use standard office software applications, web page editors, graphic software, and basic HTML.
Experience developing rubrics to assess student performance and/or course development.




Desired Qualifications:


A Master's Degree in Educational Media, Instructional Development or Design, or related field, or an equivalent combination of education and related experience.
Extensive experience (typically 5+ years) in course development and/or redesign, as well as creating instructional and training materials.


Demonstrates a Working proficiency level in:


Digital media solutions in creating interactive teaching and learning tools
Instructional technologies such as course management systems, wikis, lecture capture, and virtual classrooms


Demonstrates an Extensive proficiency level in:


Working with online instructional technologies
Project management skills and experience in an integrated team of diverse stakeholders
