Department Summary : The UI Department of Surgery is committed to saving lives-and improving our patients??? quality of life-through excellent surgical techniques and extraordinary patient care. Our surgeons and medical professionals address a wide variety of complex medical issues, from matching donors with recipients in the Organ Transplant Center to providing continuous care for both adult and pediatric trauma victims in the state???s only designated Level I Trauma Center and certified regional Burn Treatment Center. Our specialists provide critical surgical support among comprehensive, multidisciplinary teams for the treatment of cancer, gastrointestinal and colorectal diseases, vascular ailments, as well as advanced surgical care for even the smallest pediatric patients. Skilled plastic and reconstructive surgeons manage complex reconstructive issues resulting from deformities, traumatic injuries, or cancer excision in both adult and pediatric patients, in addition to surgical and non-surgical cosmetic services for adults. Position Summary: This position will function as an independent healthcare provider who, working collaboratively within a multidisciplinary health team, is responsible for providing comprehensive care to patients on the Burn Surgery Service. Position Responsibilities : Demonstrates a high degree of clinical expertise in caring for Burn Surgery patients with acute and chronic illnesses commonly encountered within Burn Surgery; including pre- and post-operative surgical management and post-operative complications. Responsible for assessment, diagnosis, treatment, management, education, health promotion, care coordination, and mediates discharge transitions for patients and families with acute and chronic Burn Surgery health needs. Demonstrates an advanced level of clinical knowledge, communication, interdisciplinary collaboration, professionalism, and systems-based practice. Works within an interdisciplinary team with administration, nursing, physician, and university faculty to assure safe, effective, quality patient care and to promote UIHC???s educational and research missions. Provide care within the scope of practice as outlined by state law, licensing, regulations, institutional policy, and practice agreements. May begin practice after credentialing and privileging process has been completed by the University of Iowa Hospitals and Clinics Clinical Staff Office. Active hospital privileges will be required and reviewed on a semi-annual basis to maintain employment within the Department. Ability to maintain a designated work schedule. Position Qualifications : Education Required PA : Must comply with registration and licensure requirements as specified by the Iowa Board of Physician Assistant Examiners which include graduation from an accredited PA educational program and/or certification by the NCCPA. ARNP : A Master???s degree is required. A Master???s degree in Nursing is preferred. If Master???s degree is in a related field, a Baccalaureate degree in nursing is required. Family Nurse Practitioner certification, Adult/Gero or Pediatric Acute Care certification is preferred. Required Qualifications Reasonable (1-3 years) experience in area of clinical practice is required or previous experience in specified hospital specialty area or demonstrated knowledge of area of clinical practice. Evidence of ability to function with a high degree of independence while actively collaborating with health care members providing care for highly complex surgical patients. Excellent written and verbal communication skills are required. Demonstrated experience working effectively in a diverse environment PA : Eligible to be licensed by the State of Iowa to perform as a Physician Assistant. ARNP : Current certification in specialty area and licensure as ARNP in State of Iowa is required. Successful candidates will be expected to successfully acquire ACLS and PALS certification prior to start date. Desirable Qualifications Extensive knowledge of physical assessment, differential diagnoses, pathophysiology, pharmacology, management of acute and chronic Burn Surgery diagnoses. Possess the requisite knowledge and clinical skills to provide care to the adult, pediatric, and geriatric populations. Ability to prioritize work flow. Ability to learn and assist with Burn Surgery procedures and management. Experience with data and quality management projects. Two years of relevant Surgery or critical care environment. Previous operating room experience.
