Job Description:
The University of Iowa Hospitals & Clinics, Ophthalmology clinic
is seeking an Assistant Nurse Manager to manage direct care nursing
functions and to assure health services, medical care, and
evidence-based practices are delivered effectively and efficiently.
The Assistant Nurse Manager interfaces with administrative and
clinical nursing staff to provide leadership in improving and
maintaining the delivery of care processes for the Ophthalmology
clinic and its representative patient populations. Positions in
this job family will have direct patient care responsibilities in
addition to the leadership component of the role. Specifically, the
Assistant Nurse Manager will focus their efforts on planning,
organizing, directing, evaluating, and improving health care
operations, and relevant clinical education and research
programs.
Position Responsibilities
Human Resources Management:
Hiring
--- Makes effective and timely recommendations in matters of
hiring, promotion, transfer, and disciplinary action(s).
--- Makes appropriate hiring decisions.
Staff Development
--- Develops and manages the talents, strengths, and behaviors of
each individual in a diverse work group and provides each employee
with the opportunity to contribute to the goals of the unit in
collaboration with Clinic Manager, Clinical Leadership Team and
Ambulatory
--- Coaches staff to participate in team decision-making and
actively seek participation from assigned staff on decision-making
and customer service improvement activities.
--- Provides staff incentives/rewards for contributions towards
achievement of service excellence.
Performance Management
--- Completes staff evaluations, for assigned staff, on time with
written, solid justification.
--- Assures staff members are compliant with competencies,
policies, procedures, and regulations.
--- Assures performance expectations are clearly understood.
--- Holds staff accountable to meet or exceed patient
needs/expectations as well as maintain standards of collaboration
and respect withing and among multidisciplinary teams.
Employee Labor Relations
--- Understands and applies appropriately the provisions in the
union contracts.
--- Creates an atmosphere which provides for effective recruitment
and retention of qualified staff.
--- Reviews performance data, recognize trends, and take
appropriate follow-up with team members.
--- Demonstrates knowledge of University or Iowa policies and
federal laws regarding leave and accommodation processes.
Other
--- Ensures that all employees are treated with respect and in a

--- Encourages staff/employees to meet or exceed customer needs and

Financial Management:
--- Actively helps manage operating expenses by monitoring the
unit/clinic's operating budget.
--- Reviews financial reports and provide insights into budget
variances to Clinic Leadership Team.
--- Recommends budget ideas, resources, and cost containment
strategies through participation in the development of the unit
operating budget, reviewing staffing plan, reviewing service
contracts, planning for new supply costs, etc.
--- Assists the Clinic Leadership Team in developing a staffing
plan and is open to creativity in staff scheduling/flexibility.
--- Assures that fiscally goals are clearly understood by staff and
that objectives are met.
--- Motivates staff to high performance by exercising strong
stewardship of university resources.
Operations, Standards of Care, Regulatory Compliance, Quality and
Patient Satisfaction:
--- Provides clinical leadership of nursing scope of care/practice
for patient care to ensure optimal patient outcomes.
--- Collaborates with Clinic Leadership Team and UIHC Ambulatory
Leadership to identify Quality Management and patient satisfaction
opportunities for improvement.
--- Incorporates the principles of Service Excellence to ensure
positive patient/customer relations.
--- Implements and maintains standards and quality plans.
--- Identifies inefficiencies in current practice/processes,
demonstrates tolerance for change and develops a means to enhance
the process.
--- Consistently makes sound judgments after gathering factual,
objective information.

Patient Care/Service Delivery:
--- Supervises and provides care delivery and assists in
coordinating patient care teams to maximize customer service and
continuity of care.
--- Develops flexible staffing and reallocating priorities to
ensure optimal patient care, with assistance from Clinical
Leadership as needed to ensure adequate staffing and manage labor
expenses.
--- Serves as a resource for patient care problems.
--- Serves as a role model for staff by demonstrating clinical
expertise when providing direct patient care.
--- Performs direct patient care duties as needed, specifically as
part of the nursing staffing model in the Ophthalmology clinic.
--- Collaborates and develops effective interpersonal relationships
with nursing staff, medical staff, interdisciplinary teams, and
other hospital departments.
Planning and Goal Management:
--- Collaborates with Clinic Leadership Team and UIHC Ambulatory
Leadership to develop and implement clinic or division strategic
plans.
--- Uses customer feedback in planning and providing service.
--- Is self-directed in using time.
Communication/Collaboration Relationships:
--- Communicates with physicians, staff, and other health care
providers on a regular basis to promote effective and efficient
operations within the clinic.
--- Communicates with patients, families, and staff to address and
resolve issues.
--- Utilizes human resources data and budgetary information to
formulate recommendation to Clinic Leadership Team and UIHC
Ambulatory Leadership.
--- Builds and sustains relationships, resolves conflict, handles
negotiation effectively, and develops collaborative working
relationships.
--- Seeks out and is receptive to feedback from co-workers at all
levels for the purpose of growth in the role.
--- Incorporates the principles of Service Leadership to ensure
positive patient/customer relations.
--- Adheres to UIHC policies regarding personal conduct, including:
follows established leadership, remaining responsive to instruction
and coaching from supervisors and meeting the standards of personal
appearance, attendance and punctuality.
Education Programs:
--- Provides evaluative feedback for staff members and health care
students.
--- Coaches the staff in implementation of standards of care,
professional development, promotes staff specialty & clinical
certifications, adherence to the standards of regulatory bodies
(i.e., The Joint Commission, OSHA, and other regulatory bodies as
appropriate)
--- Educates and mentors staff in the management of complex patient
care issues.
--- Actively works with clinical instructors/educators to
facilitate clinical education experiences for staff and
students.
--- Invests in own continuous learning and skill enhancement.
Research Administration:
--- Supports unit/clinic evidence-based practice (EBP) research
initiatives by facilitating the incorporation of quality management
and evidence-based practices in nursing care.
--- Supports changes in nursing care using evidence-based practice
(EBP).

Education/Licensure Requirements
--- Bachelor's degree in Nursing
--- Current license to practice nursing in Iowa or ability to
obtain an Iowa license by date of hire is required
Experience Requirements
--- Minimum 1-3 years of relevant experience implementing clinical
practice/practice in a healthcare setting.
--- Minimum 1-3 years of demonstrated skills in management and/or
supervision of people and/or projects requiring significant
teamwork, collaboration, and leadership.
--- Ability to work effectively with interdisciplinary teams by
demonstrating excellent interpersonal and team leadership
skills.
--- Excellent written and verbal communication skills to serve as a
liaison and to collaborate with physicians, staff, patients, and
other customers.
--- Exceptional problem-solving skills, decision making and
critical thinking skills.
--- Demonstrates effective teaching skills for staff and patient
education.
--- Proficiency with computer software applications (such as
Microsoft programs).
--- Demonstrates time management, organization of workload,

Desired Qualifications
--- Experience in an ophthalmic clinic setting in the past 5
years
--- Experience in ambulatory care setting in the past 5 years
--- Experience working in an academic medical center.
--- Demonstrated skills in effective communication, collective
bargaining, and time management
--- Relevant expertise and knowledge for coaching and mentoring
team members to reach their highest potential.
--- Knowledge of UI and UIHC policies, procedures, protocols, and
regulations.
--- Experience with development and implementation of
evidence-based practice (EBP) standards.
--- Membership/involvement in professional organizations.
--- Professional certification in relevant nursing role or
specialty through a nationally recognized professional nursing
certification body. If not currently certified (professional
certification), expectation is to achieve when employee is eligible
to sit for the exam.
--- Master's degree in Nursing
