Job Description:
Pharmacy Manager, Informatics and Business Intelligence The
University of Iowa Health Care, Department of Pharmaceutical Care,
is seeking a full-time Pharmacy Informatics Manager to join our
team. The Pharmacy Informatics Manager is an expert in the use of
technology to optimize medication care delivery processes, improve
patient safety, and effectively communicate patient care activity.
The manager will provide oversight to the pharmacy informatics
team, coordinate and work closely with managers on projects in
their areas involving information systems and data, and have an
integral relationship with the hospitals information systems team
(HCIS). - Responsibilities include: development and coordination of
Epic Willow, Epic Willow Ambulatory, and Epic Inventory;
consultation on other Epic clinical applications that utilize
medications; consultation on projects that involve and/or are
related to information systems; attend regular meetings with the
HCIS teams involved with Epic applications; be the primary pharmacy
contact for other Epic project directors; continue to develop
progressive pharmacy services within the informatics
infrastructure; communicate available tools and services within the
information system to all pharmacy staff; staff development with an
active teaching role related to informatics; precept residents and
students; and participate on multidisciplinary committees. This
position will collaborate with pharmacy leadership and staff, all
clinical departments, and EHR project teams to promote a safe,
optimal and cost-effective medication use system. The pharmacy
informatics manager will also hold the position within HCIS as the
Application Coordinator for the Epic Willow, Epic Willow
Ambulatory, and Epic Inventory applications. These activities
require effective communication, organizational skills, personnel
supervision, data management and reporting, process evaluation and
improvement, and staff development/training. A considerable amount
of innovation, independence, creativity, and flexibility are
required in the decision making and problem solving process.
Candidate will have a thorough understanding of changing health
care systems in order to assist the department in managing the drug
use process through the continuum of patient care which includes
acute care, ambulatory care, and various alternate sites of care in
an integral health system. - Duties to include: Pharmaceutical Care
Operations Assists in the planning of the delivery and improvement
of services, programs and personnel related to informatics and
business intelligence. Assigns tasks to team members and monitors
individual and team progress. Provides technical consultation,
guidance and oversight for pharmacy operations. Creates an
environment that encourages high performance and teamwork. Work
with members of the pharmacy team and other departments to
implement systems for patient care. Coordinates website development
and creation of sites to use internally for communication. Assist
with answering help desk tickets and phone calls. Identify, track,
and communicate project issues and resolution paths as appropriate.
Ensuring steps are taken as necessary to assure timely resolution.
Coordinate with other project managers and management staff to plan
and schedule projects and mitigate project resource conflicts and
constraints. Review SU's, release notes per upgrade, and
participate in upgrade planning/testing for all pharmacy
information and automation systems. Work with interface team where
application requires an interface, coordinate with interface team
the planning of application and integrated testing required for go
live. Work with nursing and information systems regarding smart
pump implementation and management. Coordinate smart pump
medication library deployment activities. Supports continuity of
care systems across acute, ambulatory, and other practice sites.
Manage data reporting and information related to medication safety.
Manage data reporting and assist with ensuring data is presented in
a manner that can assist with decision making. Prepare work plans,
identifying steps involved, resources required and parties who
should be involved both within and outside the department. -
Consult and provide coordination regarding automation, such as
automated dispensing cabinets, robotics, IV pumps, etc. Education
Work with informatics team and HCIS resources to establish
educational information related to system upgrades or process
changes for department staff. Provide overviews related to upgrades
and/or other changes to the pharmacy computer systems to Department
of Pharmacy. Develop understanding and provide education as needed
related to other technology used within department. Serve as a
preceptor for pharmacy students and residents. Provide didactic
education at College of Pharmacy as needed and appropriate. Create
synergy between practice initiatives and PharmD students and
resident rotations. Communicate new services or procedures to
pharmacy staff and others who may be affected. Health Care System
Improvement Evaluate problems/concerns identified by staff in
collaboration with leadership team and informatics team to create a
safe and effective solution. Work with members of healthcare
informatics, including HCIS and nursing, to improve electronic
health record. Participate in the development and monitoring of
pharmacy practice standards for the department of pharmacy.
Participate in the planning and implementation of new programs and
services. Evaluate and analyze projects, develop project
specifications and create and implement project plans to
successfully meets goals and objectives. Maintain a strong
knowledge of Epic documentation materials and serve as a resource
for application development. Plan, implement, and evaluate new
clinical and technical processes including multi-disciplinary
groups for program/service. Provide oversight for Epic pharmacy
systems and be a consultant for University of Iowa Health Care
Community Connect programs. Compliance and Regulatory Management
Assist with utilizing the computer system to help ensure compliance
with regulatory standards. Monitoring of data to ensure accuracy. -
Assist in development of new processes and standards for monitoring
of medication therapies. Serve as consultant on medication safety
and serve on standing committees as needed. Provide consultation on
department medication safety initiatives and work with team to
implement hospital-wide safety initiatives. Help to ensure
compliance with accreditation standards and with federal, state,
and local regulations related to medication safety. Upon request,
review provided reports for medication errors, adverse drug events,
ineffective service, or other problem identification. Analyze and
work with area team to implement quality improvement measure for
improving organizational performance. - Human Resource Management
Hires, develops, and manages the performance of staff. Coordinate
and lead team and staff meetings for assigned areas of
responsibility. Assures staff are compliant with UI policies and
procedures, laws and regulations. Supervises operational and
clinical activities of informatics team. Conducts evaluations on
personal performance at the work place and recommends improvement
plans. Work with staff on an ongoing basis to improve performance,
guiding and coaching staff in solving problems which arise in a
day-to-day routine. - Plans resources for the department and
discusses process in personnel management. Assures the scheduling
of adequate staff in a timely fashion for assigned teams. Monitor
the progress of assignments and performance of daily
responsibilities for all assigned personnel, coaching and
disciplining staff as necessary. Measurement of employee
satisfaction and implementation of improvement initiatives.
Understand medication billing processes and how they are impacted
by the EHR system. Assist with development of mechanisms to monitor
charges and other financial data from the EHR systems. Assists with
gathering of information on supporting charges or drug utilization.
Support implementation of specific department drug use cost
avoidance targets with practice teams. TECHNICAL COMPETENCIES

intelligence planning by developing dashboards and monitoring
mechanisms. Participates in collecting and evaluating data to
identify drug use problems. Keeps current with data systems used to
provide data to department leaders related to medication
utilization. Effective Communications Communicates well downward,
upward, and outward. Adapts documents and presentations for
intended audience. - Maintains focus on the topic at hand.
Education Requirements: Bachelor of Science degree in Pharmacy or
Doctor of Pharmacy degree. Current license or eligibility to be
licensed as Pharmacist by Iowa Board of Pharmacy. Experience
Requirements: Completion of an ASHP-accredited PGY1/PGY2
Health-System Administration Residency or minimum of five (5)
years' experience in a complex health-system pharmacy environment.
Alternative residency training will be evaluated as acceptable
alternatives based upon experiences. Excellent interpersonal,
written and verbal communication skills. Strong interest in
informatics and business intelligence. Ability and willingness to
act as preceptor Job-related experience with and/or commitment to
service excellence is required Job-related experience with and/ or
commitment to diversity in the work environment is required.
Desired Qualifications: Job-related experience in informatics or
operations. Experience in a large, complex academic health system.
A Master of Science in Pharmacy or healthcare/management related
advanced degree such as an MHA, MPH or MBA or advance informatics
degree such as MHSI, is desirable. Experience with
automation/technology, human resources management, project
management and Epic electronic health record is highly desirable.
Board of Pharmacy Specialties certification is highly desirable.
